About Steve Strang

Steve has lived in the area of St. Clements for the last 26 years. He has been married to his wife Sandra for 24 years and has three children who attend University, and local schools. Steve enjoys family holidays, fishing, golf and older vehicles. He has been on Council since 2002, in 2004 he ran in a bi election to become Mayor. He has been head of Council since.

Steve has Chaired the Manitoba Capital Region which consists of the City of Winnipeg and the 15 municipalities surrounding it. The Capital region is in place to deal with regional issues such as Transportation, Regional Planning, Environmental issues that would affect all municipalities surrounding and including the City of Winnipeg. He is presently acting as Past Chair.

Steve chaired the RRIC (Red River Infrastructure Committee) which consisted of the municipalities of East St. Paul, West St. Paul, St. Andrews, City of Selkirk and St. Clements. This was established to address the sewage issues along the Red River Corridor from the City of Winnipeg, to the City of Selkirk.

Steve is the past Chair and present board memeber of the Mayors and Reeves of the South Basin. The council of St. Clements started the first municipal meetings regarding Devils Lake. This eventually turned into the Mayors and Reeves of the South Basin, and now has blossomed into the Lake Friendly Campaign. The Lake Friendly Campaign is an educational tool. It teaches what you put down your toilet and sink ends up in the lake and that residents can make a difference by making better choices. The Lake Friendly Campaign is now in Ontario and now looking to expand into all four Provinces and also in the United States, where the water shed is in. Lake Friendly is also carried by many retailers in our area, who are helping make the initiative a success.

Steve is the presently the Chair of the Selkirk and District Planning Board and first to chair the board from the Municipality of St. Clements. The Selkirk and District Planning Board is the second largest planning district in the Province. It covers the area of West St. Paul, St. Andrews, City of Selkirk, Village of Dunnottar, and the RM of St. Clements

Steve is also the past Chair of the Red River North Maintenance Inc. (Amphibex Corp.) This is the Corporation which was set up 4 years ago to address the issue of Ice Inducted Flooding. Prior to this Corporation being formed, nothing was ever done to address the issues of ice jamming and flooding along the Red River. The Corporation is now a multi -million dollar body which the RM of St. Andrews, the City of Selkirk and the RM of St. Clements have partnered with alongside the Province of Manitoba.

  • Mayor Strang has met with Premier Selinger a number of times on leading issues and has strong relationships with the Premier and the Ministers.
  • The first municipal leader who presented to the Council of the City of Winnipeg on behalf of the Capital Region.
  • Has a strong relationship with Mayor Sam Katz of the City of Winnipeg.
  • Great relationship with our neighboring municipalities and their leaders.
  • Has strong relationship with all Mayors and Reeves in the Capital Region.
  • The first municipal leader who presented to the City of Winnipeg’s Executive Policy Committee.
  • Organized the first ever South Basin meeting between the municipalities and the First Nation communities around the lake along side of Chief Glen Hudson of Pequis First Nations.
  • Successfully fought for our Community protection rights on the Floodway Expansion.
  • Successfully fought for Flood relief, buyouts and mitigation for St. Clements Citizens.
  • Helped bring the Ice Breaking and Ice Mitigation Program to the region.
